How much internet speed IPTV needs

Your plan's headline speed matters less than the speed that actually reaches the TV at 8 pm. Here is what to check.

Quick answer

Plan for about 10 Mbps per screen for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, measured on the TV device in the evening. Most Ontario fibre and cable plans have plenty; the usual bottleneck is Wi-Fi between the router and the TV.

By household

Speed you need

HouseholdScreens at onceSteady speed to aim for
One TV, HD110 Mbps
One TV, Full HD sports115 Mbps
One 4K TV125 Mbps
Family: two TVs and a tablet345 to 50 Mbps
Large household, 5 screens575 Mbps or more

Testing

How to test it properly

  • Run a speed test on the TV device itself (a speed test app on the Firestick or TV), not on your phone next to the router.
  • Test between 7 and 10 pm on a weekday, when Ontario home networks are busiest.
  • If the TV gets much less than the router, the Wi-Fi is the problem: use Ethernet, the 5 GHz band, or a mesh point.
  • Pause big downloads, game updates and cloud backups during live games.

Questions

Speed questions

How many Mbps do I need for IPTV?

About 10 Mbps per screen for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, as a steady speed in the evening. For three Full HD screens at once, plan around 45 to 50 Mbps.

Does rural Ontario internet work for IPTV?

Often yes. Fibre, cable and most fixed wireless connections give enough for HD. Satellite internet with high latency can struggle; test with the free trial before ordering.

Is Wi-Fi enough?

Good 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the TV is fine. Through floors and walls, especially to basements, speed can drop sharply; an Ethernet cable or a mesh point solves it.

Do I need a VPN?

No. A VPN is not needed and usually slows the stream. If you already use one on the TV device, tell us so we send a server that works with it.
